"I have a tender spot in my heart for cripples, bastards, and broken things."

Tyrion Lannister, from A Game of Thrones by George R. R. Martin

"It is summer time! It is time to climb up on things and yell at other things that are too high to reach. It is time to mess up the calm quiet routines we built up all winter. With fire. It is time to make yourself proud and everyone else a little nervous."

Joey Comeau

Dear internet friends:

The idea that you’re some kind of failure if you don’t have your life figured out by a certain point is bullshit. There is nothing wrong with just living day-to-day.  And if you don’t have any huge ambition beyond becoming a better person as you age and otherwise trying not to screw up too bad, that’s okay too.  Never feel like you’re not as good as other people just because there’s not some job you want to have or country you want to live in or group you want to belong to.  Love God, and love your fellow humans, and figure out what that means for you on a practical level, and don’t ever give in to feeling inadequate if what it means has nothing to do with where you live or how you make your money.

The kingdom of God is big enough for all of us — type-As and underachievers alike. And I wish to God I’d learned that sooner.

Peace to you.

I want to listen to The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me, but I can’t, because it will break my heart.  AND I’M NOT EVEN SAD RIGHT NOW.  Internet, help.

So good. What happened between that album and Daisy?

I feel like everyone I know is getting married. Meanwhile, I’ve been afraid to talk to girls ever since the last one dumped me (three months ago tomorrow (do I really know that number?)).

Internet, let’s eat a bunch of ice cream and listen to emo music until we feel okay about stuff again.

You know, given that Jesus lived in the first century and was just a carpenter/itinerant teacher, letting him take the wheel of a modern automobile would probably be a terrible idea.

"But ministry isn’t all about others, what they think and how they feel. Your first job in ministry is to save your own soul. And there may be people here who’ll have flourishing ministries, healing neighborhoods, nations, even denominations, meanwhile pausing to rewrite the Dogmatics, stay one step ahead of popular electronic devices, and even run a year’s youth program without a single person eating a slice of pizza or producing a mission trip T-shirt. But you may be here tonight realizing that church-based ministry is not for you; or that your heart and soul isn’t going to lie in career and public profile but in rearing children and being a friend and neighbor; or that as far as understanding where you belong in the kingdom of God you’re none the wiser, albeit better informed. And I say unto you, “Maybe you’ll flourish in ministry; maybe you’ll have a clear sense of call and that call will be honoured and fostered by disciples and overseers alike. Maybe every day you’ll wake up and feel a freedom in God’s service that surpasses any other possible joy. But even if not, know that God is redeeming the world through your hands, your feet, your heart, your love, your gentleness, your kindness, whether you’re aware of it or not."

Read that link. It’s brilliant.
